Most individuals who study or work in a culture other than their own go through a period of culture shock. Culture shock is more than only homesickness. It involves confusing emotions while adjusting to many things that are different, dealing with the new culture's practices and values, rebuilding social relationships, and establishing a sense of one's self as a competent individual. Culture shock can be anxiety producing, depressing, and isolating and it can negatively affect the intellectual efficiency and self-confidence.
